António Almeida is a
Coordinator Professor at Lisbon School
of Education, where he is responsible
for the coordination of the Master
Course in the 1st cycle of Primary
Education and of the 2nd Cycle in
Mathematics and Science. He is also
coordinator of the Science Education
Area in that institution. He has been
responsible for several courses for
in-service teacher training in
Didactics of Science, Environmental
Education and Outdoor Education. He
has published several books and
articles in international journals in
the fields of Environmental Education,
Environmental Ethics, Didactic of
Science and in Geoscience Education.
He is also the author of books on
literature for children in Portuguese
(Dono de Tudo, Alerta no Zoo e Poupa
Poupada) based on ecological issues
and dealing with the relationship
between human and other living beings.
Presently, he is the coordinator of
the projects GLOCAL-agir and
PREDINATUR dedicated to the promotion
of the visitation to natural areas.

This symposium includes five
presentations which highlight the
importance of outdoor activities in
natural areas and their implication in
teaching practice.

The GLOCAL-agir Project: a way to
connect natural and urban areas
The symposium begins with a
presentation based on the documental
analysis of the text of the Agenda
2030 for Sustainable Development and
analyses how the contact with natural
areas is essential to achieve its
principles. The following presentation
is a study that checks the relevance
attributed by more than one hundred
Portuguese teachers to outdoor
activities. Then, a study with
pre-service teachers is focused on the
identification of their knowledge
about the River Tagus and how they
view the river as an educational
resource. An interdisciplinary
experience with pre-service teachers
is related after and shows how the
students articulate objectives of
science and language in an outdoor
activity to a natural area. Finally,
it is reported the content of a
project that articulating the
visitation of natural areas with a
dynamics of reforestation of the
campus of an institution.
